Students Raise $3,000 for Rogers House

Students Raise $3,000 for Rogers House

Last May, a science teacher at College catholique Franco-Ouest was diagnosed with brain cancer and since he was very close to the students and staff, when he didn't return in September, the school thought it would be important to do something for him and his family.

They also wanted to start a tradition at the school with an annual fund raising event for a local charity. Although looking for the right charity was difficult, they searched for something that would help cancer patients and children at the same time and eventually, their search ended with Roger's House.

The health of their colleague took a turn for the worst at the end of November and they decided to act quickly so that he could see the 1st event. Unfortunately, he past away on November 30th at age 54.

Because time was now critical, the staff gave 2 weeks to the students to collect funds and the inaugural walk around Seyton Drive took place on December 17th 2005. On that beautiful December day, 1 000 students, staff members and friends of the College catholique Franco-Ouest walked in honor of one of their own that had just past away.

To raise the maximum amount of money, the students were challenged to collect more then $4,500. If the objective was met, 15 teachers and staff members would sleep on the roof of the school. In the 2 weeks, the students and staff collected more than $10,000!! The staff and students agreed to give $7,000 of that money to the family of their late friend which made their otherwise difficult Christmas, a little bit brighter.

The remaining $3,000 has started a tradition with Roger's House and it is the goal of the students and staff to reach $30,000 by year 2010.

Roger's House would like to thank all of the the students, staff and friends of the College catholique Franco-Ouest for their generosity, devotion and support for their 1st annual walk-a-thon and look forward to a long relationship of helping children and families dealing with progressive, life-limiting illnesses.
